A Novel Route of Mixed Catalysis for Production of Fatty Acid Methyl Esters from Potential Seed Oil Sources

چکیده
Depleting petroleum resources coupled with the environmental consequences of fossil fuel combustion have led to search for renewable alternatives, such as biodiesel. In this study, sunflower (Helianthus annus), mustard (Brassica compestres) and pearl millet (Pennisetum americanum) seed oils were converted into biodiesel (fatty acid methyl esters) by acid-, base- lipase-catalyzed transesterification, resultant properties determined. The esters displayed superior iodine values (102–139), low densities, a high cetane number (CN). highest yield was obtained from oil, which provided cloud (CP) pour (PP) points −3.5 5 °C, respectively, CN 53. oil had density 0.81–0.86 kg/L at 16 CP 2 PP −8 47. yielded 0.87–0.89 kg/L, 4 °C −5 46. major fatty acids identified in sunflower, mustard, linolenic (49.2%), oleic (82.2%), linoleic (73.9%), respectively. present study reports ideal PP, extend use commercial level.

Novel fatty acid methyl esters from the actinomycete Micromonospora aurantiaca
The volatiles released by Micromonospora aurantiaca were collected by means of a closed-loop stripping apparatus (CLSA) and analysed by GC-MS. The headspace extracts contained more than 90 compounds from different classes. Fatty acid methyl esters (FAMEs) comprised the major compound class including saturated unbranched, monomethyl and dimethyl branched FAMEs in diverse structural variants: Unb...
متن کاملCrystallization Behavior of Fatty Acid Methyl Esters
Biodiesel from most agricultural feedstocks has flow properties that are prone to startup and operability problems during cold weather. Biodiesel from soybean oil is generally a mixture of long-chain fatty acid alkyl esters composed of 0.15–0.20 mass fraction saturated esters (melting point [MP] 0 C) mixed with unsaturated esters (MP \ 0 C). This work investigates the crystallization properties...
متن کاملUtilization of crude karanj (Pongamia pinnata) oil as a potential feedstock for the synthesis of fatty acid methyl esters.
Methyl esters were synthesized from crude karanj oil (CKO) by single step esterification with methanol using sulfuric acid (H(2)SO(4)) and phosphoric acid (H(3)PO(4)) as catalysts in a homogeneous batch process. H(3)PO(4) was less active than H(2)SO(4) during the process as it presented very low ester yields (<20%) for the various molar ratios of fatty acid to alcohol studied. With H(2)SO(4) as...
متن کاملEvaluation of Fatty Acid Composition of Oil Extracted from Nine Varieties of Sunflower Seed
In this study nine new varieties of sunflower seeds were obtained and subjected to oil extraction using soxhlet apparatus. The extracted oil was analyzed for fatty acid composition and phosphorus content to measure the phospholipid concentration. The results indicated that Armavirski variety had the highest oil content. The fatty acid composition of the extracted oils indicated that Armavirski ...
متن کاملPreparation of fatty acid methyl esters for gas-liquid chromatography.
A convenient method using commercial aqueous concentrated HCl (conc. HCl; 35%, w/w) as an acid catalyst was developed for preparation of fatty acid methyl esters (FAMEs) from sterol esters, triacylglycerols, phospholipids, and FFAs for gas-liquid chromatography (GC). An 8% (w/v) solution of HCl in methanol/water (85:15, v/v) was prepared by diluting 9.7 ml of conc. HCl with 41.5 ml of methanol....
